36 Days of Type

36 days of type is a yearly open call inviting designers, illustrators and visual artists to share their views on the letters and numbers of our alphabet. For the 2020 edition, I decided to design an alphabet mixing typography, illustration, geometry and graffiti, where each letter is inspired by a word and its meaning.

Bold: of a colour, design, or shape having a strong, vivid, or clear appearance. A bold typeface or letter.

Chrome: a hard, shiny metal that is an alloy of chromium and other metals

Distortion: a change, twist, or exaggeration that makes something appear different from the way it really is.

Extrusion: realistic three dimensional type that has a defined light source.

Flammable: capable of being easily ignited and of burning quickly.

Geometry: something characterized or decorated with regular lines and shapes.

Halftones: technique that simulates continuous-tone imagery through the use of dots varying either in size or in spacing, thus generating a gradient-like effect.

Imagination: the act or power of forming a mental image of something not present to the senses or never before wholly perceived in reality.

Jagged: something that has a rough , uneven shape or edge with lots of sharp points.

Kinetic: medium that contains movement perceivable by the viewer, or that extends the perspective of the artwork and incorporate multidimensional movement.

Liquid: substance that flows freely but is of constant volume, like water or oil.

Movement: visual rhythm is done by repeating shapes in a pattern, lines, colors, or any other visual component.

Negative: negative space may be most evident when the space around a subject, forms an interesting or relevant shape.

Origami: art of paper folding, often associated with japanese culture.

Pixel: smallest unit of a digital image or graphic, that can be applied and represented on a digital display device.

Quartz: a quartz crystal that when placed in an electric field oscillates at a constant frequency and is used to control devices which require precise regulation.

Rugged: having a broken, rocky, uneven surface.

Sliced: cut into thin pieces.

Throwup: in graffiti a throwup is an easy-to-paint bubble style letter.

United: joined together as a group, combined into a single entity.

Vector: computer graphic images defined in terms of points on a cartesian plan, which are connected by lines and curves to form polygons and other shapes.

Warped: bent or twisted out of shape, distorted.

X: used to represent a number, or the name of person or thing that is not known or stated.

Yarn: a similar strand of another material such as metal, glass, or plastic.

Zigzag: a line or course having abrupt alternate right and left turns.
